The City of Riviera Beach is a small harbor city in Palm Beach County, Florida. Like many local governments across the country, Riviera Beach has struggled over the past few years to continue to improve city infrastructure with a tight budget and limited human resources. Federal funding programs, like the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, continue to channel funds for the construction of renovations and repairs to local roads. Grants like the CDBG, however, often come with a price to public works departments for the costs of designs, design tools, and skilled personnel not covered by the grant. Further, these grants most often include deadlines for use that force cities like Riviera Beach to complete projects quickly and with little room for errors or delays. Continue reading
GSA Moves to LEED Gold for All New Federal Buildings and Major Renovations
Over the past several years, substantial regulation has been passed mandating the “greening” of federal government buildings. Last month was no exception and saw the declaration of a new “gold” standard.
In late October 2010, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) issued a new mandate requiring that all federal building construction projects and “substantial” renovation projects achieve a minimum LEED Gold certification in their quest to improve energy efficiency.
Leadership in Environmental Efficiency Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized and widely-accepted third party green building certification program, established by the U.S. Green Building Council, that determines the energy efficiency and sustainability of building projects. Continue reading

The archived event is a little hard to find, but your best bet is to navigate straight to the Auditorium in the virtual event hub where you’ll find the webcast archives. If you’re looking for a good read, go to the Exhibit Hall and click on your professional track (Buildings, Utilities, Civil Engineering, etc.) Each “booth” has its own resource section including white papers and videos. For the past sixteen years she has written a monthly column in Cadalyst magazine called “Circles and Lines” and is the voice behind the popular Cadalyst videos – “Tips and Tricks Tuesday with Lynn Allen”. Lynn started using AutoCAD® software with Release 1.4, over 20 years ago, and she taught at the corporate and collegiate level for 13 years before joining Autodesk.
